Advocacy training Ohrid, June 07-09, 2013

In the period from June 7th to 9th, 2013, at the Scout Centre in Ohrid, the fourth and last advocacy training, part of the Project Agora was held. The project is run by the Scout Association of Macedonia and supported by the USAID project for civil society and implemented by the Open Society Foundation Macedonia.

The training was opportunity for 63 participants from various Macedonian cities to learn the theoretical methods of advocacy as well as to gain practical skills for advocacy and management of advocacy processes.

Participants of the training worked in groups in order to achieve better dynamics which will allow the 63 participants to be actively involved in the sessions.

The first day started with the meeting of the participants and after that continued with the theoretical acknowledgment of the term “advocacy” and why the youth should advocate for their needs. Furthermore, the need for overcoming the stereotypes was expressed as a single way to successful advocacy process.

Next day activities began in the morning and through the sessions, the participants entered the early phase in the creation of advocacy processes in a practical way and developed the strategy approach in a detailed manner.

The last day of the training emphasized communication, organization and the structure of the advocacy process. Moreover, as a central element of the training was the part called “Change the world” that included obligations for the participants after the training.

The participants worked in small groups, created their own standings and needs on various questions in form of pilot projects.

Level of diversity of the initiatives was high and the projects were carefully prepared:

- Creating of the secondary school organization;

- Improvement of the conditions for the people with disabilities to find a job;

- Protections of the endemic species in Ohrid Lake;

- Creation of channels and tools for communication as well as information about the opportunities that civil society offers to the secondary school students;

- Improvement of the accessibility of the educational institutions for the youth with physical disabilities.

– Career centers in the schools run by the youth themselves.

 

During the third day of the training, the participants gained knowledge of the organizational structures, organizational skills and practically tried to build a communication strategy by using the social media.

Initiatives of the work groups are expected to start in September, 2013.

The third day training finished with evaluation session which allowed the participants, anonymously, to evaluate the training.

Stop external testing, cultural events and youth space…

On 17 May 2013 in Sveti Nikole, round table was organized with young people from Sveti Nikole in order to identify their needs in this city.

On this event youth talked about their needs and worked to find solutions and discuss about how to accomplish their needs. This roundtable was attended by only 10 active youth.

Problems identified were related to several topics: opening the pool for recreation and sport, providing a space intended for socializing youngs and disagreement towards external testing.

The groups specifically developed the problem of lack of cultural events in the city and the small range of content for young people, they constructed more ideas for events that will contribute to attractive events for young people.

Not only the municipality, but they also has identified the private sector as a possible supporter of the initiative.

Youngs expressed indignation on the model of external testing and they consider that it not give a realistic picture of achieved knowledge in formal education and was imposed over youth. The group worked on ways to constructively address the institutions around this problem and get support from other youth.

Reconstruction and reopening of Kumanovo city pool, bicycle tracks…

On May 16th, at 12:00 o’clock, in the premises of Municipality of Kumanovo, round table for youth was held. The goal of this round table was to identify the needs of youth in Kumanovo. This event lasted for 2 hours and methods such informal education, work in groups and team work were used.

On this event, young people from Kumanovo spoke about their needs and worked together towards finding the perfect steps for overcome the common problems. The event had 38 young participants from Kumanovo secondary schools and non-governmental organizations.

Young people that participated on this event expressed their needs and it was notable that young people have similar needs. The problems that were expressed consisted of local problems such reopening of the city pool, recreation and sports as well as subjects related to the city infrastructure such bicycle tracks. Furthermore, youth asked for activities that are no more part of the city life.

Moreover, participants discussed the decreased level of city culture with emphasis on traffic culture related to the bicyclers that are not respected as equal participants in the city traffic.

One of the groups developed a concept that will unite cultural and art centers. They discussed the need for reopening of the city theater which was imagined as a place that can contribute to increasing the city culture. They were consent about the theater location but to be reconstructed. The working group decided that the Municipality of Kumanovo has the obligation to financially support the idea based on petition signed by the citizens.

The participants were informed about the advocacy trainings that are part of the project Agora were suggested to use these events in order to be prepared for realizing their needs in practice.

Additionally, on the public event, Kumanovo citizens expressed their opinions on the democracy gauge and from total 40 opinions, 6 praised the level of democracy, 5 were completely critical and the rest of them were moderate.

This round table was organized in cooperation with the local scout unit “Skaut” and the Center for intercultural development – Kumanovo.

Reducing the violence and division between young people

On April 30 at 12 am in the Green Center was held the fifth annual roundtable to identify the needs and problems of young people from Struga which is part of the Agora, project supported by USAID’s Civil Society, conducted by the Open Society Foundation Macedonia.
The 23 youngs discuss their needs, and briefly had the opportunity to see and feel from firsthand how looks organized advocacy of some of their common needs. Most of the participants were members of the Youth Educational Forum from Struga and the rest were members of the scout squad Krste Jon Struga and Scout Unit Mirko Mileski.

Briefly event took place at the specified order:
• Informing participants of the project and its goals, implementers and their role as supporters
• Defining the specific needs of young people who has different backgrounds
• Presentation of the model of advocacy organized in small groups
• Closing of the event with the presentation of the website and invited to apply for weekend training for advocacy

In addition to the personal needs of young people, most of the common needs and gave participants regarding the improvement of conditions for practical education in the schools from which they come, and generally improving conditions in the city for sports and recreation for young people.

Consequently, some of the topics that are listed in groups and were identified as basic needs of youth who are involved in Struga:
• equipping the school laboratory for biology and chemistry
• Reviving and equipping the city pool
• Reduce violence and division between young people

For the first time on the event most of the participants were youngs with Albanian as native language. Moderators Team had a great opportunity and a challenge to work with a mixed group.
In order to achieve the selection expression, presentation of group work went in Albanian language with translation in Macedonian language.

The event was highly accomplished and all participants received basic understanding of the term advocacy and the responsibility and opportunities that young people should take in the future.

By 14:00 started public event in Struga. The stand was placed on the bridge of the river Black Drin early Struga bazaar. Within an hour and a half moderators managed to animate some 60 young people went there. Most passersby were introduced in detail the objectives of the project website, supporters and implementers, as well as the possibility of participation in advocacy training.

The opinions expressed in themeter democracy were: 27 expressed dissatisfaction with the condition, 7 of them were placed in the middle of the gauge moderation while expressing opinions expressed positive 8 and developed democracy.

Opening Youth Center in Kicevo, raising the culture …

On April 5, 2013 at 12: 00 pm, at the Center for Community Development – Kicevo was organized a round table in order to identify the needs of the youth of this city. The identification finished in 14: 00 pm. The methods that were used during the session were conducted through informal education, small group work and teamwork.

On the event youth talked about their needs and by working together and determined needs and solutions to overcome common problems in order to achieve their needs. This roundtable was attended by 20 active youth from Macedonian and Albanian ethnic community in the city, as well as a practitioner of the Peace Corps of the United States.

Young initially expressed their individual needs and noticed that many of those needs are repeating. Problems cited were related to several issues: pollution of the city, issues related to the infrastructure of the city, the opportunity for young people to attend activities that are no longer carried out in the municipality and many other activities directed towards the conclusion that the city lacks cultural and sports development.

Yet most young people have decided to retain and discuss the possibility that will allow them to organize events of any nature such as concerts, exhibitions of paintings and other handicrafts, film screenings, music companies and so on.

Unanimously, the young participants agreed that the culture of the municipality is on a lower level. In the past there was a space for all of them, but over time many of them have ceased to function. Young said united with a common need can restore the spirit of the culture.

One group in particular has developed the project for the unification of multiple cultural associations. They discussed the opening of the YCK – Youth Center in Kicevo where they have organized events from all branches. Together they set location, space that is used to accommodate the youth centar. They said this problem may consists in apathy and indifference of the young than in the lack of funds. Kicevo municipality was mentioned as a major potential partner and facilitator in this project as well as other non-governmental organizations that work in this area.

The public event was held in downtown Kicevo that despite rainy weather youth had the opportunity to be informed about the project and the issues that affect them, and for democracy in their society. They had the opportunity to voice their opinion through youth gauge of democracy. The results of this gauge was pretty negative, ie 30 posts, there were 3 for correct Democracy, 3-5 moderate democracy and the remaining 22 are declared for final non democracy.

Second Advocacy training was held at Struga, March 29-31

From 29 to 31 March 2013, at the Scout Center Struga, the second of total four advocacy trainings was held. This training is part of the project Agora, which is project implemented by the Scouts Association of Macedonia, supported by the USAID project for Civil Soceity and conducted by the Open Society Foundation – Macedonia.

Training enabled the 40 participants to become familiar with the theoretical models of advocacy, and also to gain practical skills for advocacy. Participants were constantly and actively engaged in activities that contributed to the dynamic process and quality of education.

The first day included introduction to each other and then continued with a theoretical introduction to the concept of representation and the reasons why young people need to advocate for their needs. Also highlighted was the need for the youth to overcome stereotypes which is the only way to be high quality and successful agents.

The activities of the second day of advocacy training started early and inlcuded intensive work process as well as for the trainers and the participants. Firstly, participants were introduced various methods and tools for advocacy and advocacy strategies. Then, the participants had the opportunity to work at their own advocacy process that will be ready for implementation in realistic circumstances after the training.

The last day included work that emphasize communication, organization and structure in the process of advocacy. Also, as a central element was the "Change the World" which included taking responsibilities of participants after training.

Participants were led through the method of work in small groups. They were oriented to build their views and needs together and advocate them through projects. The young people that worked on the projects realized that they have common needs. Some of them were oriented to reduce or full release the price of public transport, others to open scout units in cities where there are no such. One of the most interesting projects was the implementation of project activities in educational institutions which would allow young people to find some new activities and to acquire new skills. Also young people cited the problem of acquiring work experience and proposed that companies should have an obligation to train young people when they finish higher education in the form of practice that will be recorded and recognized by law.

The three-day training was completed with an evaluation where participants through questionnaire evaluated the training.

Next advocacy training will be held in Sveti Nikole.

Youth Can?

From 8th to 10th of March, at Katlanovska Brezica (Skopje) first of total three trainings was held which is part of project Aghora, project of Scout Association of Macedonia, supported by USAID project of civil society run through Open Society Foundation.

This training included 22 participants that had opportunity to meet the theoretical models and practical skills of advocacy. Participants of the training were constantly actively integrated in the activities which led to dynamic and quality process of education.
First day included socializing among participants, and after that the training continued with theoretical definitions of advocacy and reasons why the youth should advocate their needs. Furthermore, it was emphasized that young people should overcome the stereotypes as unique way to become quality and successful advocates.

The activities from the second day started early at the morning and announced intensive work process of trainers and participants. Participants met with the methods and tools for advocacy as well as the strategies for advocacy. Afterwards, participants of the training had the opportunity to work on real process for advocacy that is going to be ready for implementing in real life setting after the training ends.
The last day, emphasis was put on communication strategies as well as organization and structure in one advocacy process. Moreover, as central part of this training day was event called “Change the world” which included allocation of real setting advocacy obligations.
Three day training finished with evaluation session which was opportunity for the participants, anonymously, to express their opinion on whole training.

The next advocacy training will occur in Struga, 29-31 of March. Deadline for application for this training is March, 15.
